Quarantine 2020: How I'm Getting My True Crime Fix

It is no secret that we are currently going through a pandemic in this country. With Americans quarantined in their home, many are going stir crazy. Currently across the country restaurants, bars, and many stores are completely shut down. In Pennsylvania the liquor stores shut down and we were all forced to stock up! It is very apparent that anxiety is running high and the fear of the unknown is starting to affect us all.

My quarantine began as my job as a juvenile probation officer was deemed essential. I was given the task to prepare a plan of action for my boss that would detail what my new "normal" work days would look like. I submitted my plan and this allowed me to start working at home Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I only had to work physically in my office Tuesday and Thursday to limit my exposure of the unknown. Although this plan was put in place I knew it was only a matter of time before things got worse and changed again. With stay at home orders now in place I am currently enjoying being at home with my boyfriend and fur babies. I am well-stocked in my two favorite things to get me through my quarantine..wine and true crime! Since it is unknown how long this "new normal" will be lasting I knew that I could count on Netflix and good ole fashion paperback books to get me through. I always knew my stockpile of books that collect dust on my nightstand would come in handy one day!

I thought it was important to share my current favorite true crime content with you all. I hope that I can provide you with new suggestion to help you get through your quarantine. Keep reading for a list of what I have watched and read so far while being at home!

Documentary // Unabomber: In His Own Words

My boyfriend and I began watching this when it popped up on our Netflix's suggestions to watch. He is nowhere near the true-crime nerd that I am however this case has always intrigued him. There are only a few episodes in this short serious but throughout them, you hear recordings from Ted Kaczynski himself. What we found extremely interesting in this series was you her from Ted's brother and sister-in-law, who are responsible for Ted's capture. We also learned a few new bits of information regarding the case from documentary and would highly recommend watching if you are interested in learning more about the Unabomber case.

Documentary // The Trails of Gabriel Fernandez

I had read on twitter that this documentary had been released on Netflix. There was a lot of buzz around it on social media and it only took a few days for people to start asking me if I had seen the horrific story. This story pulls at the heart strings of anyone watching, but for me it was extremely emotional. I work closely with Child Protective Services everyday in my career and knowing that a social worker could fail children they way they failed

Gabriel is heartbreaking. I could only watch one or two episodes at a time before needing a break.

Documentary // I Am A Killer

I started watching this series on Netflix before I was quarantined at my home. It is what I would turn on when there was "nothing else to watch". I will not lie and say you MUST watch this because honestly, I found some of the episodes extremely boring. Each episode is a different story, from a different convicted killer. Some are interesting and others are hard to follow. I do believe some of the stories are worth the watch though!

Book // The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson

The O.J case is a case that I have always wanted to learn more about. I had just entered this worried when a few months later the famous white Bronco chase happened on live TV. I was able to finish this nearly 500-page book in less than a week. It was very easy to read and super interesting. I learned an enormous amount of information about this case through out reading the book. Some information was shocking and some did not surprise me. This book does a great job at laying out the death of Nicole Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, as well the arrest and trail of O.J. Simpson. You even get a glimpse into the wrongful actions and discrimination that was going on within the LAPD during this time.

OJ's White Ford Bronco: Alcatraz East Crime Museum

Documentary // Tiger King

I had seen information about this show and different memes all over my social media. We decided to start watching this one afternoon and were hooked within the first ten minutes! We binged it all in one day and were flabbergasted by what we had watched. This is differently not your typical true crime story and I promise that whenever you think it can not get crazier...IT DOES. I do not want to give any details away because I highly recommend that everyone check out this circus for themselves.

Podcast // All of Them

I have made my love for podcasts known many times on my blog. I am extremely thankful for the podcasts that I listen to during this "new normal". I highly encourage everyone to search and subscribe to a podcast that fits their interest and lifestyle. Whether the topic is true crime, fitness, business or maybe even celebrity drama, there is a podcast for everyone. I find podcasts to be a great use of my time and they also make certain tasks in my daily life more interesting. I have done a lot of cleaning during this quarantine while listening to my favorite true-crime podcast.

I hope that everyone is staying safe and taking care of themselves and their family members through out this quarantine. During times like this, we must come together to remind everyone that we are strong and resilient. Warm wishes and virtual hugs to all my readers!
